KL5131: Parallele Ensemble, Music of Darius Milhaud

Parallele Ensemble, Music of Darius Milhaud

Darius Milhaud is a composer whose music reflects his heritage of Provence in the south of France. Full of bright, beautiful melodies, he captures the Mediterranean spirit in music.

"Saudades do Brazil" was specifically composed to invoke wonderful reminiscences of Brazil. This work is a collection of twelve tangos, each titles after a specific site of Rio de Janeiro.

"Cantate de la Guerre" is a world premiere recording written in 1940 during the German occupation of France in World War II.

"Aspen Serenade" was written as a tribute to Aspen, Colorado.

Elinor Armer: "Api" is a new work. Ms. Armer studied with Milhaud at Mill College. This is a work which relates through music the life of a honey bee - interesting in that it clearly reflects the influence of Milhaud's teaching.

KL5134: The Music of: Isidor Achron, Lazar Saminsky, Ernest Bloch. Conductor: David Amos — The Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Barry Goldsmith, Piano

The Music of: Isidor Achron, Lazar Saminsky, Ernest Bloch. Conductor: David Amos — The Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Barry Goldsmith, Piano

Three mid-twentieth century composers, two of whom have had little of their music performed or recorded in the last 50 years. Offered here are two piano concertos by Isidor Achron, never before recorded, performed by Barry Goldsmith, a work by Lazar Saminsky, titled, "The Vow," intended for piano and orchestra, but never completed, then discovered by Barry Goldsmith in a two piano version with sketching including orchestral orchestration. Here it has been completely orchestrated for piano and orchestra and offered as a newly discovered work.

The third composer is Ernest Bloch. His composition, "Helvetia, A Land of Mountains and its Peoples," is one of his least known works and has rarely been heard outside of Switzerland. It is the last major work by this Swiss-American composer to be recorded.

Heinrich Ignaz Franz Von Biber

Although Biber is thought of as a composer of mystical violin sonatas, he was also a prolific composer of liturgical music. One of his most spectacular work is his large scale Missa Christi Resurgentis.
