18th Century Bassoon Concertos, John Heard, Bassoon

KL5123

Kiev National Chamber Orchestra
Alexander Ostrowski, Conductor
Mr. Heard is founder and bassoonist of the internationally recognized Miami Wind Quintet, a resident faculty ensemble at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, where he is Professor of Bassoon and Chamber Music. He has recorded four important 18th century bassoon concertos with the Kieve National Chamber Orchestra, "Camerata Kiev", conducted by Alexander Ostrowski.

Camerata Kiev, an orchestra of thirty two musicians of the Kiev Philharmonic, is the resident ensemble of the Kiev Music Festival and the Kiev International Piano Competition, which is dedicated to the memory of Vladimir Horowitz.

"...John Heard hails from the faculty of Miami University in Ohio, but judging from this recording, he should be hailing from the Vienna Philharmonic. This is quality bassoon playing by any standards: lustrous tone, unfaltering technique, and intense communicative skill. Truly, his Mozart ranks right up there with the best?

...The Kiev Chamber Orchestra ("Camerata Kiev") plays with a rich warmth and dark, richly burnished tone — quite a change from how this music is played today...
